Q&A with Jeff Kupietzky, CEO at PowerInbox

Media 7 | January 11, 2021

Jeff Kupietzky, CEO at PowerInbox, helps businesses to monetize their email newsletters through dynamic content. He has also served in leadership positions with Oversee.net, X1 Technologies, Digital Insight, Siebel Systems and Loudcloud/Opsware.

MEDIA 7: Please take us through your professional journey of becoming the CEO of PowerInbox.
JEFF KUPIETZKY:
I began my career in Silicon Valley at several high profile start-ups.  I then moved to SoCal where I worked for Digital Insight and then Oversee.net where I had my first opportunity as a CEO.  I joined PowerInbox 9 years ago and have been fortunate to have been in the same role since I began!

M7: What are the unique Email Marketing features offered by PowerInbox that sets it apart from its competitors?
JK:
Firstly, we’re the only platform designed specifically for publishers, to help them reach and engage subscribers and grow revenue through multichannel messaging and monetization. We can help publishers end their reliance on third-party platforms like social media and search, to cut out the middleman, and build direct relationships with their audiences.

Secondly, our platform uses AI to learn subscribers’ preferences—the content and ads they want to see and that are most relevant to them and their interests—and then automatically sends more of what they want to them over the channel that’s most effective. Because it all happens automatically, and in a single platform, it makes it extremely easy and efficient, especially for small teams. Our customers often say that our biggest key benefit is that we offer a “set it and forget it” solution.

Our biggest key benefit is that we offer a “set it and forget it” solution.

M7: What are the benefits of using an AI-driven platform for communication? What does PowerInbox focus more on- privacy or personalization?
JK:
AI allows us to precisely deliver the right message to the right person over the right channel, rather than taking a close guess and hoping for the best. Unlike solutions that use cookies, which provide only a broad overview of your target audience and can sometimes be entirely inaccurate, we track known subscribers’ interests and behaviors, so that our content recommendations are much more personalized and accurate. Rather than targeting a person who seems to meet a certain set of criteria, our AI platform can tie an email address to a specific individual. While their personal information is kept private, we learn from their click history what they like so that we can help publishers deliver more of it to them.

As for privacy vs. personalization, we prioritize both. We only have access to an email address, never to any personal identifying information. And, because our system is opt-in, subscribers have more control over their own data than they have for years with cookies—until GDPR laws finally forced companies to alert site visitors that they were being tracked. With our solution, publishers get the best of both worlds.

M7: What has been the most valuable lesson that you have included in your leadership strategy so far? How do you ensure to bring out the best in your team’s talent?
JK:
I try to be as transparent as possible with the company’s progress and direct with feedback.  I have found people prefer knowing exactly where they stand and can make their own optimization when they have the same information that I do.

I try to be as transparent as possible with the company’s progress and direct with feedback. I have found people prefer knowing exactly where they stand and can make their own optimization when they have the same information that I do.

M7: How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your work? What processes did you re-tool to be able to manage your team remotely?
JK:
We have always been a distributed company with team members all around the world, so that wasn’t much of a shift for us. We acclimated to a 100% remote style of working pretty quickly.

What did change was the demand for our product. Between the pandemic, election, social unrest, and other chaos that 2020 brought, breaking news was happening practically every hour, and publishers needed a way to distribute it to users over a channel users trust. Email proved to be that channel and we saw email traffic and engagement surge because of the pandemic.

It’s been great to see our customers building stronger relationships with their subscribers and adding some much-needed revenue at a time when they needed it most.

Never quit. Success is sticking it out until you reach the outcome you believe in.

M7: What is your secret to maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life?
JK:
Given that I have been blessed with 5 children, I believe any time at work provides me balance.

M7: Your advice to the budding entrepreneurs?
JK:
Never quit. Success is sticking it out until you reach the outcome you believe in.
